I was looking for a little something to listen to on my morning drive for a couple of days before vacation and Shelley had suggested Broken by Jenny Lawson. I read I Choose Darkness a while back, that was a whole lot of fun, so I thought heck yeah!
The Audible was narrated by Lawson herself and you would not have wanted it any other way. She has a way about her, and I really don’t think that a professional narrator could have done her justice.
Lawson really gets into the nitty gritty of her life and the things that have befallen her; she has such incredible courage to not only reveal all of this in such an open manner, but kudos to her for being able to do it in such an entertaining manner. Given the choice between crying and laughing, she chooses laughter – or at least to try and make others laugh.
This was a book that made me angry. Angry at a society that does this to people, that is so focused on profit that we forget to look out for others. I would say that Broken is an important book. Important in the sense that it brings to light the torment that some people go through and the battle that they face each day just to do the things that we take for granted. It is important, because it is how we can start to normalize these things and normalization is a step towards addressing the problem.
Broken can mean so many things; and even though Lawson may feel broken, she is not – she is going through her own problems and just because you can’t see her problems does not make them any less real.
