I decided to read Molka as part of my October reading. It was my first time reading a book by Monika Kim, and I was definitely intrigued.
Molka: an abbreviation of molrae-kamera, a “sneaky camera” hidden to capture covert images and videos for voyeurs.
While I didn’t find it to be scary in the traditional sense, it certainly was scary in the fact that there can be hidden cameras out there capturing the private moments of people, in this case, women. Even though the story is fictional, it touches on some very relevant issues in today’s society: misogyny, privilege, class, social status. I think that most people are tired of certain people getting away with bad behavior because of who they are, how much money they have, or what their gender is. It infuriated me, but in my opinion, a book that makes you feel is a good book.
The characters definitely made me feel something. Molka was disturbing, maddening, gruesome, and made me root for the comeuppance of certain characters. Monika Kim delivered a story that pulled me into the characters’ lives and didn’t let me go until the final page. This story is going to be hard to forget. I will definitely be reading more books by this author in the future.
