Sometimes it is fun to jump into a quick little story. It has been a while since I’ve taken a trip into Greek mythology with Madeline Miller, I’m pretty sure she owes me a full-length retelling of a myth by now, but that’s just my opinion.
This was a story that I didn’t know. Greek mythology is filled with all sorts of stories, some epic, others seem to be lacking a whole lot of details. There are stories that we know more about than actually know – they were referenced in other works, or they survived only as images on pottery. Damn those Greeks for putting all of their eggs in one library. Wouldn’t it be great if someone could develop some of these into full-length stories (hint, hint).
I enjoyed Mestra, it was fun to get into a story that I didn’t know. Miller has a great way of making her stories into something that the ancient Greeks would have never approved of, but this point of view is refreshing.
At eighty pages, it isn’t a huge commitment, and this story was well worth the time.
