The chase is a staple of horror. Building the drama, the reader or viewer is made to feel like they are right there with the character. It is the ultimate will they-won’t they. What would Halloween or Friday the 13th be without a great chase? There we are with the protagonist, running through the woods. Do they(we) get away? We get to tell them: No! Don’t run into the woods! Why are you running to the basement – there is no way out there! Sure, run out onto that dock, you will definitely get away there. We all know the possible results: they get away (unlikely), they run into a dead friend (probable), they get caught (definitely). Despite knowing the result, we can’t help but hope for the best and scream our instructions. Here are some of my favorite books with incredible chase scenes.
I’m Thinking of Ending Things – By Iain Reid
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires – By Grady Hendrix
The Ritual – By Adam Nevill
FantasticLand – By Mike Bockoven
Pines – By Blake Crouch
