If I had to describe this novel with only one word, it would be original.
Nothing to See Here is a story of class, wealth, influence, finding your meaning, but above all, family. It was quirky, funny, and it did make me a little hot under the collar, but don’t worry, it wasn’t enough to make me spontaneously combust. Overall, I found the story to be very touching and emotional, and I was very invested in the characters’ lives.
Lillian’s life has not been what she had hoped it would be. Ever since the scandal at boarding school found her back in her hometown, she has struggled to find her way. I loved Lillian. I wanted nothing more than for Lillian to succeed, find her own slice of happiness. With an emotionally distant mother, no direction in her life, and nothing tying her down, she accepts an offer from Madison, her old friend from boarding school, to be the governess to her two stepchildren.
Madison and Lillian couldn’t be more different, but they became fast friends at boarding school. Despite Lilian’s short-lived stint there, they have kept in touch through correspondence every once in a while. Lillian could never deny Madison anything, so she accepts the offer. After all, what else does she really have to do?
This story was so much fun. I loved the stepchildren. I loved Lillian’s attempt at trying to be a good caretaker to them. There was nothing easy about taking care of these fire children, but my goodness, I just liked witnessing their bond grow.
Nothing to See Here was a highly entertaining read that kept me happily flipping the pages. It was a fun story, but it also had plenty of heart to go along with it. I will be looking for other books by Kevin Wilson to add to my TBR list.
